8th Grade Fine Art Enrichment

Course Description

 This class will build on the Fine Art Enrichment experience students had with me as 7th graders. I will challenge them to express themselves creatively, accept the ideas of others, and appreciate the multi-faceted world of the Fine Arts. This class will explore the arts through theatre and visual art design.
 
 
Week Eighteen:
  • THE LAST WEEK! What fun this group has been! Ok- this last week students will be advised for high school course options and complete ONE FINAL PROJECT
  • Students will be given an option list for their final project. I am excited to see their last creative effort. 
  • Projects will be due Thursday and Friday will be a game day and celebration
Week Seventeen:
  • Monday - research and compose 2 separate designs for the is week's watercolor paintings- paint two washes
  • Tuesday - Painting Day one
  • Wednesday- Painting Day two
  • Thursday- Present and critique both paintings, review for quiz
  • Friday- Study, Quiz, and discuss next week's project 
Week Sixteen: (one day will be lost to testing so we will shift to Monday the final due date if needed)
  • Quick reflection of the artistic principles you saw in DC
  • Monday-Begin watercolor -painting wash techniques
  • Tuesday- Trying trees and shapes in watercolor paint - practice
  • Wednesday- testing
  • Thursday- painting practice - cat painting
  • Friday- No school
Week Fifteen:
  • The majority of students are attending the Washington DC trip this week. Before they left I gave students a few "artist eye" tips for the things they would be seeing. There work for the week is to see real life applications of what they have been doing in class all semester. What an amazing opportunity.
  • The 4 students not attending will have the opportunity to do make-up work for my class or do an art work of their choice due Friday. Their choices will be between applied medium and the subject will be "What makes America Great"
Week Fourteen:
  • What great work is happening with oil pastel. We are going to take our time to finish so that rushing does not impact their great start. Monday and Tuesday, depending on progress will be our goal for wrap up. I will adjust as needed for the majority.
  • When we finish, we will be playing with a few watercolor techniques and apply what we learned about composition to another medium.
Week Thirteen:
  • Students will move back into art work
  • Students will connect the lessons they learned through acting - establishing details and adjusting for a better product in their visual art piece
  • Students will learn laws of composition and advanced oil pastel techniques
Week Twelve:
  • Pantomime is more than non-verbal communication. It is an exercise in physical control and expressiveness.
  • This week students will take those skills and apply them specifically to the movement of a character as it relates to developing a character as an actor.
  • Strap in for another active week!
Week Eleven:
  • Where is this semester flying away to? 8 weeks until finals! )By the way you will not have a final in this class- Yea!)
  • This weeks we will be doing a LOT of PLAYING - particularly with pantomime. Like improvisations, pantomime is best experienced and practiced by playing games and getting out of our seats to work!
  • Prep for laughs and silliness this week as we welcome you back from Spring Break - SILENTLY!
Week Ten:
  • Back to visual arts, we will be doing sculptures
  • Students will use what they learned about design and models in their visual art sculptures
Week Nine:
  • Continuing Technical Theatre!!!!
  • Wrap up Friday
Week Eight:
  • Technical Theatre Unit - exploring the other side of production
  • This week students will be filmed during lessons for my student teacher
Week Seven:
  • Mon/ Tues- holiday
  • Wed- intro to  technical areas of theatre
  • Thurs- intro to tech process and comparing to rehearsal process of acting
  • Fri- The jobs of theatre
  • No test this week
Week Six:
  • Wrapped up Improvisation
  • Establishing types of plays
  • Using types of plays and understanding of characteristics to form stories
  • Perform original storytelling piece as a performance assessment
Week Five:
  • Monday- Introduce improvisation and its relationship to other areas of life
  • Tues-Thurs - explore, apply, and hone improvising skills
  • Fri- culminating classroom performance
  • No quiz- this unit's assessment will be through daily participation and Friday's in class presentation
Week Four:
  • Mon- standardized testing
  • Tues-Thurs - Printmaking exploration and project making 
  • Critique of work and art show inventory
Week Three:
  • Mon no school
  • Tues -finish art proj - return on Thursday if needed
  • Wed- Fri working on emphasis through variety in performance
Week Two:
  • Mon and Tues - Finish your world view project - Due Tues at the end of class
  • Wed-Fri: Explore and apply balance, emphasis, and contrast
  • Quiz Fri
 
Week One:
  • classroom procedures,
  • understanding course curriculum and expectations

  • work on ensemble building - the group must gel to explore safely
  • meet this semester's intern who will co-teach part of this semester with me.
 
Below are the weeks' lesson for last semester. Lessons will be similar, but adjust for scheduling variances like Spring Break, Sporting events, and the Washington Trip. In addition, some subjects have flexibility for student choice and interest. Each semester is adjusted to meet the same goals in a way unique to the current students' abilities and interests.
 
Week Eighteen-
  • Student choice of favorite games and activities from the 18 weeks
Week Seventeen-
  • Portfolio Review
  • Plan student choice project based on an art medium you were interested in starting again
  • Pull art show pieces and take home work
  • Friday- Last day to turn in any missing or incomplete projects from this 9 weeks
 
Week Sixteen-
  • Mon- Give review for the final and draw bicycles
  • Tues- Time to review and games with Mrs. Haase
  • Wed-Thurs- Color pencil review and piece
  • Fri- Grade color pencil and black and white pieces, critique as a group
Week Fifteen-
  • Mon - No School
  • Tues- Wrapping up Improv
  • Wed- Still Life Drawing Day
  • Thurs- Charcoal day
  • Fri- Finish black and white drawing/ work on any unfinished piece from this 9 weeks
Week Fourteen-
  • Monday- Finish up texture projects - either sculpture or drawing
  • Wed- Share project progress, start Improvisation
  • Thurs-Fri- Becoming a more confident thinker and speaker through Improvisation
Week Thirteen:
  • Mon-Tues- Drawing to create realistic texture and depth
  • Wed- Connecting Tableau to Sculpture; Visual Arts to the stage
  • Thurs- Fri- Creating a sculpture with texture and a story like tableau
 
Week Twelve:
  • This week will be SUPER fun - clowning workshop, basics of comic timing, and a juggling day. Come ready to participate willingly and creatively
Week Eleven:
  • Pantomime spilled over thanks to hurricane Michael! We will finish up on Wednesday
  • Thursday and Friday we will either finish our oil pastel because nearly half did not or students will have an opportunity to do a bonus watercolor piece for the art show
Week Ten:
  • Monday/ Tuesday - Fall Break
  • Wed- Starting Pantomime - learning non-verbal communication
  • Thursday- playing with pantomime specifics
  • Friday- Fun pantomime practice project
Week Nine:
  • Monday - In Service day
  • Tuesday Wrap up - Quiz
  • Wed/ Thurs - learning and trying oil pastel
  • Friday - project due
Week Eight
  • Monday-Overview of puppetry - types, history, and cultural differences
  • Tuesday- How to use a puppet play day with characterization
  • Wednesday- Vocal technique with puppets and assign scenes
  • Thursday- Rehearsal day for their scenes/ Perform
  • Friday -Review for quiz
Week Six and Seven:
  • Monday - Intro to Technical theatre and Foley artists
  • Tuesday- Intro to Props and play with some
  • Wednesday/ Thursday (each class will miss one day for assembly)- Intro to Set design and try it ourselves
  • Friday (Pep rally schedule) - Put it all together, share ideas, review
  • Monday-use stage lighting and distribution to create moods and give information
  • Tuesday- color as it relates to lights from yesterday and transitions to costumes
  • Wednesday-playing with costumes design
  • Thursday - Wrap up, review, and apply - study for our quiz
  • Friday - Quiz and game day
 
Week Five:
  • Monday - No school
  • Tuesday- Create your resist design and do a practice lion drawing
  • Wednesday- put lion drawing onto project paper using resist, review analogues
  • Thursday - apply analogue watercolors
  • Friday - Look at dried art work, critique, select hallway hangs (Pep rally schedule)
Week Four:
  • Monday- start printmaking, create an abstract background with yarn
  • Tuesday- review silhouette and foam stamp printing
  • Wednesday- Explore printmaking using a gel pad technique
  • Thursday - Critique both printmaking projects, study for quiz, watch video on color resist
  • Friday- Quiz on printmaking and improvisation activities with Ms. Haase
Week Three:
  • Monday - Contrast collage due; play with contrast in the voice and body
  • Tuesday- Contrast in characterization
  • Wednesday- Staging basics - contrast in space and physical positions 
  • Thursday- applying the week to a simple scene
  • Friday - perform and play - this performance is your week's assessment
