English – Mrs. Stacey Shaver’s Course Outline

Coursework is designed to facilitate mastery of the AISA standards in English to help you become a better reader, writer, speaker, and thinker. Along the way, we’ll enjoy compelling modern works of non-fiction and classics from literature, including John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, Homer’s The Odyssey, and Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet among others. We will improve your grammar, advance your vocabulary, increase your confidence about your ability to improve the world and, I hope, have a great time learning together.

Classroom Guidelines and Expectations

  1. Be here.

You need to be in your assigned seat when the bell rings or you will be counted as tardy. After receiving three tardies, you will be assigned to after-school detention and, worse, be on my mental list of kids who don’t care about my class. Stay off that list.

Also, students are expected to remain in their seats until permitted to get up. Failure to do so will result in break detention on the following school day.

  1. Be responsible.

Bring everything you’ll need, such as paper, a pen, and work that’s due. All assignments and projects are collected at the beginning of class on the due date. Late homework will not receive credit. Major projects, such as essays and speeches, will be accepted for half-credit within 24 hours of the due date. After that, no credit will be given. You are responsible for getting any missed notes or assignments that were given during an absence. Things that can be completed during your absence are expected on the day you return. If work was given that you didn’t have access to, you’ll be given up to five days to complete the work. Make-up work will not be given for days of suspension or unexcused absences. If you suffer an extended illness, contact me to discuss a schedule for you to turn in your work.

Also, any work that is deemed as cheating will result in a zero for all parties involved, including the person who provided the answers to help others cheat.

Homework is limited but important. Most of the time, homework will consist of reading (so

we’ll have something interesting to talk about during class) or finishing some written work

that you were not able to complete in class. The homework load will not be excessive.

  1. Be respectful.

You are expected to be courteous and respectful to all students, teachers, and guests. There will be no swearing, name-calling, or snide comments. Also, cell phones will be turned off and parked in the classroom “parking lot” during class. Chromebooks and earbuds/headphones cannot be used, out, or opened unless instructed by me. The use of technology at inappropriate times is rude and, per school policy, devices that are ill-used will be taken from you and returned to your parents. Remember, you control your technology; it shouldn’t control you.

  1. Be awesome.

Think for yourself. If you merely parrot back to me things I already said in class, you will not have a good year. If, however, you are willing to think deeply, take risks, and work like a madman, then you’ll love this class.

You are responsible for getting any missed notes or assignments from the teacher that were given during your absence. Things like previously assigned deadlines that can be completed during your absence are expected on the day you return. If work was given that you didn’t have access to, you’ll be given time to complete the work. Make-up work will not be given
